The Jenny Craig Program was founded in 1983 and has become one of the world's largest weight management companies. The weight loss program was developed by experts on the Jenny Craig medical advisory board and registered dieticians. The Jenny Craig program is calorie based and portion controlled and includes all food groups in moderation. The meals reflect the 2005 USDA food pyramid and contain 50 to 60 percent carbohydrates, 20 to 25 percent protein and 20 to 25 percent fat. The meals are supplemented with fresh fruits and vegetables, whole grains and reduced-fat dairy products. The clients are eventually weaned off from the prepared meals and learn how to plan and prepare healthy menus, cook at home, and avoid difficulties when traveling or eating at restaurants.

The program helps clients develop physically active lifestyles to support long-term weight management. Their exercise program was developed in consultation with the Cooper Institute and helps clients gradually increase their physical activity. They also address concerns such as lack of time, motivation and body image.

The program offers clients weekly private phone consultations with personal counselors. The consultants assist with problem-solving strategies and support to help clients manage their weight issues, stress and emotions. They help clients keep in touch with their goals, plan strategies for weight loss success, and develop new skills and life-changing habits for lifelong weight maintenance.

The Jenny Craig programs are offered at 645 Jenny Craig centers in the U.S. and around the world, as well as the at-home Jenny Direct program by internet, phone, and mail. A 24 hour telephone and online counseling support service is available daily. The program offers a wide variety of cookbooks, fitness videos, audiocassettes and equipment, and prepared foods to help support weight loss goals.
